How Often Should You Replace Your Pool Liner?

In-ground Pool by Imperial Pools

It’s almost time for the pool to be opened after a long winter hibernation. As much as we love our epic runs down the mountain as the flakes fly all winter long, we’re ready for a little sunshine, and a little float time this splash season. A lot of the questions we’ve been getting so far this spring have been revolving around pool liners. How often should they be replaced, how can I tell if it’s time, and how can I keep good care of my liner, have been some of the common asks. We turned on the defrosters to get the excess ice off of our pool team, and here is what they think about your pool liner:

How Often Should You Replace Your Pool Liner?

How often you replace your pool liner is truly dependent on a few different factors, like if it’s an above-ground or in-ground pool, how much sun is hitting it, how often you’re swimming, and how balanced your water quality usually is. On the short end, you can see above-ground pools needing a fresh liner at the 5-year mark, but a well-maintained liner can last 10-15 years. In-ground pools can see an extended life, with a well-kept liner lasting as long as 20 years, but an in-ground that has seen a little more wear and tear could be replaced as soon as at the 8-year range.

How Do You Know if Your Pool Liner Needs to be Replaced?

Some typical signs to look out for on your liner are cracks, wrinkles, fading color, rust staining, and leaking. While some of these can be fixed temporarily, these are the tell-tale signs that you should start thinking about treating your pool to a new liner.

How to Take Care and Extend the Life of Your Pool Liner?

There are many easy ways to extend the life of your pool liner. Here are the top ways to care for your pool liner, according to the Alpin Haus pool team:

  • Keep your water pH and Alkalinity balanced: Test your water regularly, either with test strips at home, or by bringing your pool water into your closest Alpin Haus location for free computerized testing. This way, you know exactly what water treatment products you need or don’t need!
  • Use a Solar Cover: Using a solar cover when you aren’t swimming can prevent your liner from getting hit with an excess of rays from the sun, preventing cracks and fading colors.
  • Clean Smart, Not Hard: Brushing your floor and walls with a gentle, pool-safe bristle brush can prevent small leaks and tears that turn bigger.
